The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a National Laboratory spanning Science, Innovation and Technology. NPL is ideally positioned to support delivery of the multi-disciplinary potential of Engineering Biology (EngBio) through the development of traceable measurement science tools and solutions, necessary for the successful characterisation and exploitation of biological systems.
Advances in EngBio enabled solutions will be driven through collaboration built on a foundation of reliable, repeatable and comparable measurement systems which are easily transferred between manufacturers in the same way that metrology is critical in other advanced manufacturing disciplines from aircraft to semiconductors. Today, NPL is supporting UK companies to accelerate innovation and enable scale-up of EngBio driven technologies through the development of physical reference materials, standardised analytical methodologies, internationally recognised standards and the development of best practice guidance documents.
NPL is also collaborating across the EngBio ecosystem both in the UK and internationally to understand and support the next generation of engineering biology solutions, including the requirements for the application of AI and machine learning, the development of process control and modelling systems, alongside support for standards and regulatory requirements working with our partners across the International Measurement System laboratories to ensure UK leadership and alignment on standards and standardisation to support growth and trade.
