The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a National Laboratory spanning Science, Innovation and Technology. NPL is ideally positioned to support delivery of the multi-disciplinary potential of Engineering Biology (EngBio) through the development of traceable measurement science tools and solutions, necessary for the successful characterisation and exploitation of biological systems.  

Advances in EngBio enabled solutions will be driven through collaboration built on a foundation of reliable, repeatable and comparable measurement systems which are easily transferred between manufacturers in the same way that metrology is critical in other advanced manufacturing disciplines from aircraft to semiconductors. Today, NPL is supporting UK companies to accelerate innovation and enable scale-up of EngBio driven technologies through the development of physical reference materials, standardised analytical methodologies, internationally recognised standards and the development of best practice guidance documents.  

NPL is also collaborating across the EngBio ecosystem both in the UK and internationally to understand and support the next generation of engineering biology solutions, including the requirements for the application of AI and machine learning, the development of process control and modelling systems, alongside support for standards and regulatory requirements working with our partners across the International Measurement System laboratories to ensure UK leadership and alignment on standards and standardisation to support growth and trade.

Colorifix is a biotechnology company that has developed the first entirely biological process to produce, deposit and fix pigments onto textiles. Inspired by the way colours are produced in nature and engineered through synthetic biology, our process entirely cuts out the use of toxic chemicals and leads to significant reductions in water and energy consumption.

We provide a plug-in solution for existing dye houses and mills around the world. The technology can be used with standard industry machines and works on a broad range of fabrics from natural to synthetics, allowing us to be cost-competitive and highly scalable.

Engineering Biology is a Gold Open Access journal that publishes original research and insight into the application of engineering science and practice to the design of biological devices and systems for a wide range of applications. The journal encompasses all stages of the design cycle from the development of platform technology and techniques, to industrial and scaling processes, and new technical standards. We welcome contributions from those in academic research, industry professionals, policymakers and all individuals with insights to share into the latest developments and challenges.
